Coral bleaching May 2010 19 May 2010

There is a report on massive coral bleaching in the Andaman Sea side of Thailand, covering Phuket, Surin abd Phi Phi.

The report cites the spokesperson for the Phuket Marine Biological Centre (PMBC) Dr Niphon Pongsuwan, and indicates that the water temperature there was a balmy 31-32 degC for a long time this year.

There are also unreported bleaching occurring in Pulau Weh and in Bintan, and some (hopefully) smaller events in Singapore.

Looks like this El Nino year could be a bad one for corals.
