So the Marina Barrage is officially opening today. Nice cover story on it in the Straits Times today.
The Clean and Green Singapore events will be held there this year – a whole series of talks on Chek Jawa, coral reefs and seagrasses have been scheduled, and the RGS Seagrass angels will also be exhibiting. So, come on down and support the local conservation effort!

Leg infection 28 October 2008

Eunice was bitten in the thigh by something at dinner Sunday, and by the next day it had swelled slightly. By this morning, the bite had swollen to a big, red lump (see picture).

A trip to the doc’s confirmed that the bite (or whatever it was) had infected the leg. A shot of anti-histamines and a course of anti-biotics was prescribed to deal with the infection for the next 2 days, after which, a second check would be needed to see if the meds had controlled the infection.
The origin of the name “Lazarus” Island? 23 October 2008

I tried to compile a list of Singapore island names and their meanings and origins a while ago, and recently (20 Oct 08), I received an email from a Harold Somers from the UK, who recited this piece of family history:
Quote from Harold’s email:

Hi, do you have any idea when Lazarus Island actually got its English name?
I came across your posting from 2005 while searching for some information about my great-uncle Lazarus Rayman. There is a family story as follows.
“Uncle Laz was a diplomat in Singapore who was credited by the locals with saving their gold reserves from the Japanese by moving them before the invasion. He was then incarcerated in Changi where prisoners were severely maltreated and that ruined his health leading to his eventual death in England at the age of 57. He was commemorated in Singapore by a portrait (of which I have a print) that was hung in the consulate for many years and through a small park/garden that was consecrated in his name.”
OK, a small park/garden is not the same as an island, but I cant find any mention (on the web) of a Lazarus Park or Rayman Park in Singapore.

I don’t know (and neither does Harold) if this is the basis for the name of Lazarus Island .. anyone out there who knows?
Logical absurdities 23 October 2008

Quotes from “The Human, the Orchid and the Octopus” JY Cousteau and S Schieflbein:
Logical absurdities of:
- industrialists who contend that they cannot afford the luxury of expensive waste disposal;
- fishermen who respond to declining catches by doubling their effort, thereby wiping out the stock;
- military officers who propose offsetting the dangers of a neighbours nuclear and bomb stores but augmenting their own;
- leaders who profess to support human rights, but ignore the rights of future generations;
- believing that every single scientific fact we discover must be applied;
- subordinating human interests to new technology instead of the other way round;
- bolstering the world economy by institutionalising the mass market, enriching the rich and impoverishing the poor.
No truer words have been written, I think.

I was just surfin the web today and saw that Google had a blog search function, so I decided to search for “Singapore” “marine” “environment”. Scrolling through the index, I came across “Debate with a Skeptic II”, on the The Junk Blog, which led me to Roz Savage’s blog, which, in turn, led me to “Invisibly emptied oceans”.
Amazing how a search can tangent off to something as powerful as the video on junk in our oceans, isn’t it?

A quick update … Jacki our web administrator did his magic and our site is back up. However, our email accounts seem to be still a bit cranky. If you have received bounced emails sending to “bluewatervolunteers.org” emails, try these:
Reef Walks: reefwalk@gmail.com
Reef Friends: reeffriends@gmail.com

Title says it all …
The BWV site has been down for a couple of weeks and no resolution is in sight. Something about having a change our IP address at source. Our emails have been affected as well.
We are still carrying on with our activities, however. For the Reef Walk on Oct 18, please contact Peter See at reefwalk@gmailcom. For the Reef Friends surveyors, please respond to the organiser of the Oct 26 Jong survey via the reeffriends yahoo group.
Hopefully, things will revert to normal soon.
Cheers, Jeff
